Stylus Trade-in offer * 
Cartridges and styli come in a number of shapes and styles. The best record needles try to duplicate the shape of the cutting stylus used to produce the original master disk and records.
Worn and damaged stylii will cause irreparable damage to the record grooves.
The stylus contacts only a small part of the groove wall. As the stylus wears, its smooth radius turns to a flat edge and the wear point gets wider and wider. High stress on the groove wall damages records by occasionally gouging out small amounts of vinyl material.
A higher-quality stylus and cartridge combination will accurately track the record groove, contacting the wall along a wider surface area. This allows more accurate tracking and reduces stress forces at the stylus/groove interface. The groove wall has to push the stylus tip back and forth at very high speeds. If the force required to do this is spread out along a wider surface area, then the pressure and stress & wear are reduced.

A stylus should be replaced after about 500 hours of normal service. It should be inspected every 100 hours or less for damage or unusual wear. You will need a small magnifier to inspect the tip. The cantilever arm also needs to be inspected to ensure it has not been bent or twisted.
